Our Rubber to Metal Molding Process

Here at Qualiform, we use injection and transfer molding for the encapsulation and bonding of rubber to metal. This is by far the best method for adhering rubber to both metal and plastic. In fact, it creates the most reliable mechanical bond to metal parts and inserts in comparison to other processes.

Two-Step Process

Our rubber to metal molding process involves a two-step prep process of the metal before we begin molding the rubber. We start with degreasing the metal and cleaning off any present contaminants. Once clean, we spray a heat-activated adhesive onto the metal, and the part is officially ready for rubber overmolding.

After prepping the metal, the parts are placed in a mold cavity. When molding a specific area of the metal, it is secured with special magnets. If the entire part is being encapsulated, however, the metal will be held by chaplet pins. Then, we can close the mold and begin our rubber molding process.

The molding process begins with gradually elevating the temperature to cure the rubber and activate the special adhesive on the metal part. As a result, the rubber forms a strong, mechanical bond to the metal part. Once cooled, we remove the completed part from the cavity and restart the process.

Encapsulation with Rubber to Metal Molding

If your parts need to be completely encapsulated with rubber, we use rubber insert molding, which is a slight variation of rubber to metal molding. To fully encapsulate the part in rubber, we suspend the part inside a mold cavity, so we can bond the rubber to the metal with exceptional precision.

This process also offers a variety of benefits. Bonding rubber to metal will significantly improve component stability due to the rubber’s inherent flexibility. Furthermore, these parts are also ideal for creating environmental seals as well as enhancing electrical conductivity, noise and vibration isolation, impact resistance, and corrosion resistance while meeting NEMA standards.

In addition, rubber insert molding can produce parts in a full range of sizes. Thus, it is one of the most versatile rubber molding processes in the industry.
