Transfer Molding

Rubber Transfer Molding

The rubber transfer molding process is ideal for the production of solid rubber parts, rubber parts with inserts, and parts that require bonding rubber to metal. Rubber transfer molding combines the advantages of injection rubber molding with the ease of compression molding. This process is most often used for forming rubber products that require:

  • Exact positioning
  • Bonding rubber to fragile metal parts – such as wire
  • Mold designs that contain multiple cavities and can trap air
  • Intricate parts with lower volume requirements

Qualiform’s Rubber Transfer Molding Process

Our process of transfer molding involves pushing unvulcanized rubber through sprues into a heated mold. Similar to compression molding, transfer molding requires raw material preparation into pellets and/or pre-forms.

Rather than placing the preform in the mold cavity, the rubber pre-form is placed in a chamber “pot” at the top of the mold then placed in a press. In the pot, the material is compressed by a heated plunger and transferred through sprues into the cavity below.  During this, the plunger is kept in place until the preform takes on the shape of the mold and the rubber is vulcanized.  Once the part cures, hardens, cools, it is then ejected. Any excess cured rubber left in the pot is removed and the mold cavities are cleaned for the next molding cycle to begin.

Transfer Molding for Rubber to Metal Bonding

Transfer molding is an important part of the rubber to metal bonding process or over molding, the components are loaded into a heated mold either by hand or using a loading fixture.  Material is then loaded into the well pot of the transfer mold.  Once the mold closes, the rubber is heated and then transferred through the runner. The gate sprues into the mold cavities and around the metal insert.  With the pressure and elevated temperatures, the rubber cures and vulcanizes, allowing the parts to be removed.

Rubber Transfer Molding FAQ’s

To get a quote, please provide us with a sample or print of your part for us to review. Also, please make sure you include the estimate of your annual usage requirements to assist us in the tooling design. In addition, please include the type of material, unless it is unknown or unspecified. In that case, describe the environment in which the tooling will be utilized.

Qualiform can be there to assist you from the initial design phase to the final approval of your part.

With 32+ years of rubber molding experience, Qualiform is able to offer expert recommendations for polymers and an indication of your durometer requirements.

The average lead-times for prototype tools is 2-4 weeks. For compression or transfer tooling it’s 6-8 weeks and for rubber injection molding it’s 8-10 weeks. However, in case your situation requires improved tooling lead time, we are able to work without tooling shop to meet specific customer requirements.

All of our tooling is purchased in the United States, which allows for faster responses to customer changes and faster lead-times.

Depending on the quantity of your order, most parts can be shipped within 3-4 weeks from receipt of order.

In most cases, tooling will fit into our presses. However, in some situations, minor tooling modification may be required.

Tooling is custom to each customer’s specific design, therefore, the tooling is the property of the customer after we receive payment for the product.

In order to source required metal stamping or insert, we work with an array of supply chains.

We are able to match any customer requested color, by working with rubber suppliers to provide color matches.
